The attendees of Advanced Security and Defence Studies visited the National Assembly today and on the occasion spoke with National Assembly Deputy Speaker Veroljub Arsic, Chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Marija Obradovic and Chairman of the Security Services Control Committee MA Igor Becic about the duties and mode of operation of the National Assembly and the two committees.
Speaking about the National Assembly, Deputy Speaker Veroljub Arsic emphasized its legislative and electoral duties, adding that during the last legislations enormous efforts have been invested into advancing its control duty, primarily via its working bodies.
Marija Obradovic spoke about the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee, its important legislative and supervisory role in terms of related laws and their implementation. Control over the work of the military and police is, among other things, ensured through the relevant ministries’ quarterly activity reports considered in Committee sessions, said Obradovic, adding that one important achievement during her time as head of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee is having the ministers personally present activity information before the Committee, followed by constructive debates.
The Chairman of the Security Services Control Committee MA Igor Becic emphasized the importance of the security sector for each individual state, as well as globally, which is why it is essential to keep investing into the sector so as to advance its technical and financial capacities. Becic also spoke about the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and participation of National Assembly delegations in international parliamentary organizations in charge of security issues, especially the NATO PA and CSTO PA.
The Advanced Security and Defence Studies are part of the National Defence School and their attendees are high officials in the Serbian Government’s ministries and agencies, the National assembly and other states in the region.
