The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia held a sitting on 10 July 2006 to discuss reports on Assembly delegation attendance at sittings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

The head of the Assembly delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Suzana Grubjesic, underlined that the delegation, which had visited Brussels from 2 to 7 July, took active part in three Committee sittings. Ms Grubjesic told the Committee that the most important resolution, for Serbia, adopted at the sittings was the one adopted by the Committee on Political Affairs and Security on the Western Balkans, which affirms the need for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, stating that this was the basis for international security. According to Ms Grubjesic, the resolution is not binding, but has been well received by a broad section of the general public.

The head of the Serbian Assembly’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Milos Aligrudic, told the Committee of the delegation’s participation at the Parliamentary Assembly sitting, where members had numerous bilateral contacts with other delegations.

The Foreign Affairs Committee discussed the Report on International Co-Operation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2005, the formation of ‘friendship deputies’ groups’ with other national parliaments, and the initiative of the parliament of the Austrian province of Carinthia to establish co-operation with the Serbian Assembly. As the Committee did not have a decision-making quorum, the deputies were simply informed of the items from the agenda.

The sitting was chaired by the chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Gordana Comic.
