12th Sitting of the Culture and Information Committee
At the sitting held on 17 July, the Culture and Information Committee considered the Ministry of Culture and Information Activity Information for the period April-June 2013.
Minister of Culture and Information Bratislav Petkovic presented the Ministry’s activity in said period.
The sitting also touched on the drafting of media laws, presented by Assistant Minister of Culture and Information Dragan Kolarevic. Kolarevic said that the Draft Law on Public Information and the Media had entered official Government procedure and is expected to, after receiving an opinion from Brussels, be forwarded to the National Assembly in September. The Draft Law on Electronic Media and Draft Law on Public Media Services are expected to be discussed publicly in late August. Kolarevic also said that all the draft laws had been prepared with the help of European Union experts, the OSCE and the Serbian media community.
The ensuing debate on the media laws, conducted among the Committee members, Ministry representatives and representatives of the media community and international organisations, focused on the issue of funding for public services with the possible consequences of the state’s withdrawal from media ownership and introduction of project funding. The participants of the debate also drew attention to the deadline for the Media Strategy, also discussing the media register, how to address the issue of authority over unallowable media convergence and future work of the media at the local level.
Committee member Gorica Mojovic pointed out some flaws in the Report as regards the activities aimed at preserving the cultural heritage and declared the Ministry’s legislative activity in said period lacking. She asked the Ministry representatives questions about the drafting of the Culture Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia.
The sitting was held in compliance with article 72 paragraph 5 of the National Assembly Rules of Procedure.
