Meeting with French and Romanian Delegations to NATO Parliamentary Assembly

On the sidelines of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session, on 26 May 2024, the Serbian delegation held a series of bilateral meetings ahead of tomorrow's vote at the plenum on granting the status of an associate member to the so-called "Kosovo Assembly" within the NATO PA.

The MPs thanked the Romanian delegation, headed by Senator Vasile Dincu, for their firm and principled position regarding the non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called "Kosovo". It was appealed not to support the decision to grant the status of associate member to the so-called "Kosovo Assembly", because the consequences of making such a decision would be very dangerous, i.e. they would seriously threaten the position of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and it would also have a domino effect, because it would represent a "reward" for not fulfilling the obligations undertaken, including the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

The Romanian parliamentarians emphasised the traditionally good relations between the two countries and the two nations. They said that Romania understands our position, as well as the difficult position of the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, among other things, due to the fact that members of the Romanian armed forces are engaged in the KFOR mission. They stressed that the Romanian delegation will not vote against our stance.

To the French delegation, represented by Senator Phillippe Folliot, MP Goran Rakic outlined the extremely difficult situation in which Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija find themselves, reminding them that, among other things, members of the so-called "Kosovo Security Force" shot at children and the time of the greatest Christian holiday - Christmas. He said that since Allbin Kurti came into power, the Serbs in on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija have been living in a ghetto, and granting of the status of an associate member in the NATO PA would represent a "reward" for all the terror carried out against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija. Prof. Dr Zoran Dragisic said that adopting this decision would send a very bad message from the aspect of security, since it could lead to the destabilisation of the situation, as it would represent an encouragement for Kurti to continue with his anti-Serb policy.

Senator Folliot reminded the attending that Serbia and France share very deep historical ties and that France has already not supported several decisions related to Pristina authorities’ unilateral moves. He said that they are familiar with the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, since members of the French armed forces are engaged in the KFOR mission in the area of Kosovska Mitrovica. Senator Folliot was handed a letter from the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia addressed to all the heads of delegations of NATO PA members and associate members.

The acting head of delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, MP Natasa Jovanovic spoke at the debate on the NATO PA Committee on Democracy and Security report "History and identity under attack: Protecting cultural heritage in conflict". Jovanovic pointed out that the Serbian Orthodox Church has since 1219 been present in Kosovo-Metohija, the territory of the Republic of Serbia, which is under the control of the UN, NATO and the Provisional Institutions in Pristina, where there are 1,300 churches and monasteries. She said that since the arrival of KFOR on 12 June 1999, 125 churches have been damaged or completely destroyed in Kosovo-Metohija. She especially drew attention to the fact that Visoki Decani Monastery is still protected by KFOR units and is the only sacred place in today's Europe protected by international military units. In that context, she reminded the attending of the difficult position of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, who are exposed to terror by the Provisional Institutions in Pristina, which a few days ago did not allow the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church and priests to enter Kosovo-Metohija and visit the Patriarchate of Pec. Bearing in mind the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, it stands to reason to ask the question how to, under the terror of Albin Kurti, protect the Serbian churches and monasteries, when Kurti does not want to fulfil any of his obligations, especially the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities.
