The representatives of the Union spoke of the situation in Serbia regarding decriminalization of HIV/AIDS, diagnostics of the disease, lack of drugs from the existing antiretroviral therapy palette in Serbia and the non-introduction of new medicines. They stressed that the Republic Health Insurance Fund has failed put a single new drug necessary for the treatment and prevention of the spread of the disease on the positive drug list since 2004. The need to introduce new drugs is evident in the fact that the long-term use of the same therapy leads to viral resistance and ultimately has no effect. The Union representatives also listed the activities they, as the civil sector, conduct in the fight against the disease and against the discrimination against patients living with HIV/AIDS.
The MPs stressed that it is essential introduce new drugs onto the HIV positive list so that the patients could have access to modern medical treatment and that the Criminal Code should be amended to ensure the decriminalization of HIV/AIDS.
The Union representatives also announced numerous activities organised by the civil sector to mark World AIDS Day, among them a friendly football match at the Olimp Sports Centre on 30 November and a concert at the National Theatre titled Music for Health on 1 December, and invited the MPs to attend the events.
