Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Meho Omerovic and Committee Member Milanka Jevtovic Vukojicic at Third Regional Conference of Parliamentary Bodies in Charge of Human Rights

The Joint Committee on Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with and the support of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, organised the Third Regional Conference of Parliamentary Bodies in Charge of Human Rights, entitled “The role of committees in the parliamentary oversight of human rights”, on 23 and 24 November in Sarajevo, at the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina.


The conference was a continuation of the gatherings of parliamentary bodies in the region launched on 29 and 30 October 2013 at the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, and continued on 21 and 22 January 2014 in Danilovgrad, Montenegro.

The delegation of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia comprised Committee Chairman Meho Omerovic and Committee member Milanka Jevtovic Vukojicic.

Speaking about the parliamentary oversight over human rights institutions, Meho Omerovic said that he Committee he chairs cooperates with and follows the work of the Government’s Office for Human and Minority Rights and the competent ministries depending on the area of human rights in question, especially the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs and others. Speaking of independent state bodies, the Committee cooperates with the Ombudsman, Commissioner for Protection of Equality and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection. He also said that an efficient control over the work of the Government requires cooperation with civil society organisations. The Committee also monitors the implementation of recommendations of the competent bodies of international organisations concerning Serbia’s acting in accordance with ratified international conventions.

At the end of the Third Regional Conference, the participants will adopt joint conclusions.
