Head of National Assembly Standing Delegation to PACE Takes Part in Plenary Debate on Protection of Media Freedom in Europe

The Head of National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Aleksandra Djurovic, took part in the plenary debate on the protection of media freedom in Europe, with Srecko Flego (Croatia) as the rapporteur on the topic.

Among other things, the report commends the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry into Unsolved Murders of Journalists in Serbia and Serbia’s efforts and determination to solve these cases.

“Ensuring freedom of speech and the protection of media freedom are not only a fundamental obligation of every Council of Europe member state, but also the foundation of every good democratic government”, stressed Djurovic.

Aleksandra Djurovic also pointed out that significant progress has been made in regard to the murders of Slavko Curuvija and Milan Pantic, noting that safety of journalists and freedom of expression will be prioritized. The MPs of the Council of Europe are also well aware of the set of media laws that was passed to exclude the state from media ownership and ensure transparency of media ownership.

Following an intense debate the parliamentarians adopted a resolution and recommendations on the topic.
