Gojkovic on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic on the occasion of 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women:

“Combating violence against women and domestic violence remains one of the priorities of our society. The fact that 28 women have been killed since the start of the year and that half of the instances of domestic violence remain unreported speak of the need for all social institutions to step up their activities on suppressing violence, supporting victims and encouraging them to report violence and its perpetrators. Preventing violence against women in rural areas and elderly women, protecting them, providing support and aiding their independence, requires special attention.

The Law on Preventing Domestic Violence which provided the instruments to combat this type of violence and better coordination among the state bodies and their training to recognize violence against women, has been a step forward, but now it is vital to implement it fully and consistently in the coming period. An important segment of the new gender equality law soon to be passed, based on the best practice of the countries in the region and the experiences of other European states, is dedicated to suppressing violence against women.

I would like to take the opportunity to again appeal to everyone to report violence when they notice it and not look away and to all the institutions to continue to combat violence against women.”
