Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman Meets with President of Serbian Cultural Society Prosvjeta from Vienna

Today, at the National Assembly, the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Aleksandar Cotric and Committee member Sanja Jefic Brankovic met with the President of the Serbian Cultural Society Prosvjeta from Vienna, Srdjan Mijalkovic.

The President of the Serbian Cultural Society Prosvjeta presented the activities of the society, founded in Vienna in 1902 and dedicated to the promotion of Serbian language and culture.
The Society organises various projects, such as “The Small Chat Room” intended for children of school and pre-school age which promotes the Cyrillic script and poetry in Serbian, then the learning assistance project intended for high-school students, and the rhetoric promotion project attended by Serbs of all ages. It is interesting to mention the activity the Society introduced this year aiming to promote Vienna authors writing in Serbian, added Mijalkovic. The Society organises a wide variety of activities and it would be useful if different Serbian associations joined forces in long-term structural actions with the state’s logistic, financial and structural assistance in their further efforts in the promotion of Serbian culture, said the President of the Serbian Cultural Society.
The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Aleksandar Cotric, commended the Society’s efforts stressing that the Committee endorses its work. The Serbian people in Austria do not have the status of national minority so there are difficulties in establishing Serbian schools, making it necessary for the Serbian state to assist the project of promoting Serbian culture, stressed the Committee Chairman. Cotric added that the Serbian language is disappearing, making language protection projects necessary, as well as working on establishing a cultural information centre in Vienna.
Committee member Sanja Jefic Brankovic also commended the Society’s work, stressing that it would be useful to start various creative workshops for children and promote the work of the theatre.
