Serbian Parliamentary Delegation Attends Serbian Grand Assembly and Lays Flowers at Serbian Military Cemetery in Ulm, Germany

Dragan Stanojevic, Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, and Committee member Dusan Maric, attended the grand assembly of Serbs and concert “Under the Veil of Nemanjic”, on 3 May 2025 in Ulm, Federal Republic of Germany.

The traditional event, which takes place in Ulm, a city in the German province of Baden-Württemberg, is one of the largest manifestations of Serbian culture and tradition in Western Europe coached toward bringing together cultural and artistic associations from all over Europe, as well as to preserving and nurturing our tradition in the diaspora.

Also, by laying flowers and lighting candles, the MPs paid tribute to the soldiers and officers of the Army of the Kingdom of Serbia buried at the Serbian military cemetery in Ulm, in the German province of Baden-Württemberg. In this cemetery, 142 Serbian warriors are buried, a long from their homeland, who succumbed to torture and starvation in the infamous camp Kuhberg, from 1914 to 1919.

These are Serbian soldiers from the Drina, Morava and Timok divisions, who fell into Austro-Hungarian and German captivity in the battles of Cer, Mackov Kamen, Kolubara, Leget, Gucevo and Suvobor. Among the victims buried here are civilians from Podrinje, Pomoravlje and Semberija. During the four years of the war, several thousand Serbian soldiers and civilians passed through the camp, brought there by ship, on the Danube. At least 142 of them were murdered in the camp. Only two years after the end of World War I, six surviving camp inmates (three sergeants, one non-commissioned officer and two soldiers) erected a monument to their fallen comrades.

The monument, designed by sculptor Karlo Verle, is four meters long and three meters high and symbolizes a Serbian soldier in uniform with a folk hat lying on a stone.

The members of the Serbian Parliament also laid flowers at the monument to the soldiers of Imperial Russia who died in camp Kuhberg.
