National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Republic of Tunisia, MP Jovan Janjic, met today, in the National Assembly House, with the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to the Republic of Serbia, Imen Laajili Ammari.
In a constructive and cordial conversation, the officials concluded that the relations between the two countries are characterised by traditional closeness and friendship, and that both sides are interested in expanding and strengthening overall cooperation.
The Head of the PFG Jovan Janjic said that this year we are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations, and the friendly relations, the closeness between our peoples, date back to the First World War, and this year we also mark 110 years since the landing of the Serbian army in Bizerte.
The Head of the PFG thanked Tunisia for its consistent support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for its non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo, underlining another connection between the two countries, which is their shared commitment to preserving global peace and international stability.
Ambassador Imen Laajili Ammari stressed that the support for Serbia is based on firm principles, which includes clear non-recognition of Kosovo's unilateral independence and commitment to the shared values of international law.
The Ambassador also stressed that the visits of the parliamentary friendship groups represent a new stage in our parliamentary cooperation and will serve the interests of both countries and the interests of both peoples. She particularly emphasised that our peoples are becoming closer thanks to tourism and the visits of a large number of Serbian tourists to Tunisia.
The Head of the PFG expressed his belief that the upcoming visit of the Tunisian parliamentary delegation to Serbia will contribute not only to strengthening the existing, but also to building new bridges between our parliaments, our states and our peoples. He also emphasised that tourist visits contribute to our closeness, which he believes will be even more intense this year thanks to the establishment of air traffic between our countries, with 12 flights a week.
Janjic also underlined the fact that the historical friendship between Tunisia and Serbia was symbolically crowned in 2019 by the naming of Serbia Street in the capital of Tunisia and Tunisia Street in the capital of Serbia.
The Ambassador confirmed her country's participation in the EXPO 2027 Specialized Exhibition in Belgrade, and announced that the Republic of Tunisia will be the guest of honour at the upcoming International Belgrade Book Fair this year.
The officials agreed that there is significant room to strengthen overall cooperation, with a special emphasis on economic relations, the exchange of goods, as well as intensifying work on establishing a visa-free regime.
