PFG with Southeast Asia Meets with Myanmar Union Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam), Miroslav Petrasinovic, met today with the Ambassador of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Serbia, Than Htwe, in the National Assembly House.

In a constructive and cordial conversation, the officials affirmed the two countries’ commitment to further developing the friendly and traditionally good relations. They also emphasised the importance of direct contacts between representatives of the two parliaments, as it the sets the groundwork for a deeper connection between our peoples and institutions.

Petrasinovic pointed out that full membership in the EU remains Serbia's strategic priority, noting that our country remains consistent in pursuing a sovereign, independent and militarily neutral foreign policy.

The Head of the PFG also thanked Myanmar for its consistent support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for its non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo. He also took the opportunity to speak about the difficult position of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, who are exposed to frequent violations of their human and civil rights, saying that, since the beginning of the year, there have been 35 ethnically motivated attacks on Serbs. Petrasinovic also reminded that Pristina has still not implemented its internationally undertaken obligations from the Brussels Agreement 13 years later, including the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

The Ambassador underlined that support for Serbia is based on firm principles, which include a clear non-recognition of the unilateral independence of Kosovo and a commitment to shared values of international law. The officials also highlighted the two countries' shared commitment to preserving global peace and international stability.

The Ambassador stressed that the two countries have a long tradition of friendly relations, dating back to the times of the Non-Aligned Movement.

In the course of the conversation, the Ambassador informed the Head of the PFG about the current situation in Myanmar, emphasising his commitment to the stability and economic development of the country.

They agreed that there is room to further strengthen cooperation and develop a partnership between the two countries, especially in the fields of agriculture, education, culture and communications, with an emphasis on traditional friendship, mutual respect and shared commitment to improving bilateral relations.
