National Assembly Members Condemn Hate Speech against Politicians at PACE Spring Session
The National Assembly delegation continues its work at the Spring Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
Head of the delegation Biljana Pantic Pilja and delegation member Aleksandar Mirkovic took part in the debate on "Violence and hate speech against politicians: a threat to democracy". On the occasion, they pointed out the serious consequences hate speech against politicians can have in the age of digital technologies, the abuse of freedom of speech, the unacceptable narrative of a part of the public towards the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic and his family, as well as other high-ranking government officials, whose residential addresses were made public, which was also condemned by the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos. They informed the members of PACE about the threats and attacks levelled against government representatives in the last year and a half, asked where the line is between freedom of speech and hate speech, and called for the resolution to be supported, as well as for these standards to be introduced into national legislation. Delegation members Elvira Kovacs and Vladimir Djordjevic, also participated in the debate, expressing their views on the topic and the situation in Serbia.
In the course of the session, the delegation met with Marie Fontanel, the French candidate for Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Elections for the position will be held at the next PACE plenary session, in June this year, and MEPs will choose from several candidates.
The Head of Delegation had a working lunch with the heads of state of the region, at the initiative of Piero Fassino, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans. The lunch was attended by the heads of delegations of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Montenegro, as well as the head of the German delegation, Knut Abraham, as a representative of the country that initiated the Berlin Process. Piero Fassino stressed that, in the coming period, he will direct his efforts toward promoting the EU membership of the countries of the region.
The delegation also met with representatives of the Department for the Execution of Judgements of the European Court of Human Rights, as part of efforts to involve national parliaments more closely in the oversight of the enforcement of judgments, which is the focus of the Council of Europe's Reykjavik Declaration. In the meeting, they pointed out that the Republic of Serbia has implemented 94% of the Court's decisions, and that there are no serious delays in the enforcement of judgments.
