National Assembly Deputy Speaker Nevena Djuric Opens Exhibition “Behind Every Refugee Story, There Is a Person”
National Assembly Deputy Speaker Nevena Djuric spoke at the opening of the photo exhibition marking World Refugee Day entitled “Behind Every Refugee Story, There Is a Person”, organised by the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration in the Central Hall of the National Assembly House.
On behalf of National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic and on her own behalf, Nevena Djuric welcomed the attending and thanked the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration for organising the exhibition to mark World Refugee Day.
“This exhibition reminds us of one of the most difficult pages in our national history. It reminds us of the moment when people lost their homes overnight, of families who set off into uncertainty, carrying with them only what they could not leave behind, their dearest memories and hope," Djuric said in her address.
Nevena Djuric pointed out that behind every photograph, there are human destinies, pain, suffering and anguish, but also courage, defiance and dignity to survive even when everything seems lost. She underlined that today we proudly and with our heads held high, preserve the memory of each of our victims, as well as convey the truth, so that future generations know this truth and that we never allow human destinies to become just numbers and statistics.
The exhibition "Behind Every Refugee Story, There Is a Person" speaks through photographs, personal testimonies and documentary records about the experience of being a refugee, the loss of home, but also about strength, dignity, hope and a new beginning.
The attendees were also addressed by Savo Strbac, President of the Documentation and Information Centre "Veritas", and Natasa Stanisavljevic, Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia.
