MP Cotric at IAO Annual General Assembly in Helsinki

The Head of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, MP Aleksandar Cotric, took part in the 33rd Annual General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, held in Helsinki, Finland, from 17 to 21 June 2026.

Parliamentarians discussed the topic: "Minority Christian Communities in Times of Crisis: Relations between Society, State and Church. Problems and Challenges."

In his opening remarks, IAO Secretary General Maximos Charakopoulos pointed out that "humanity today is going through serious and multiple crises, wars, refugee waves, a decline in the reputation of international institutions and an uncertain future". He emphasised that, "according to data from the United Nations Human Rights Council, 388 million Christians in the world are persecuted for their faith", adding that "Christians are often the target of attacks in parts of Europe as well". Therefore, he called for the promotion of the values of peace, tolerance and coexistence.

In his address, the Head of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Cotric spoke about the difficult position of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Orthodox believers in Kosovo-Metohija. He reminded that "after 1999, more than 200,000 Serbs were forced to leave their homes, while more than 150 Orthodox churches and church buildings were damaged, desecrated or destroyed". Recalling the March pogrom of 2004, he stressed that "some Serbian holy sites are still secured by KFOR members to this very day". Cotric underlined the importance of preserving the Visoki Decani monastery, the Pec Patriarchate, Gracanica and the Church of the Virgin Mary of Ljeviska, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as the need to protect the property rights of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Speaking about the position of Orthodox believers in the region, listed the problems that the Serbian Orthodox Church is facing in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. At the same time, he stressed that "the Republic of Serbia ensures full religious freedom to all traditional religious communities and consistently protects their rights." Referring to the position of Christian communities around the world, Cotric expressed concern "over the suffering of Christians in the Middle East, the threat to Orthodox heritage in Cyprus and Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as attacks on Copts in Egypt and Christians in Nigeria." He said that "the protection of minority Christian communities is a matter of preserving the fundamental values of modern civilisation and called for greater solidarity, unity and cooperation in the defence of religious freedoms, human dignity and cultural and spiritual heritage."

The 33rd IAO General Assembly was attended by parliamentary delegations from: Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Romania and North Macedonia.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Aleksandar Cotric met with the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, Jussi Kristian Halla-Aho, to discuss the possibilities of improving parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in Helsinki, Aleksandar Jankovic.

The participants of the 33rd IAO General Assembly adopted a Declaration unequivocally condemning any form of persecution to which minority Christian populations are exposed, aimed at their reduction, or even extermination. The adopted document emphasised the importance of protecting Christian minorities, preserving the cultural heritage of minority Christian populations around the world, and dialogue and cooperation between parliaments through the activities of the IAO and other multilateral parliamentary organisations.

The participants also adopted reports on the activities of the IAO between two general assemblies, financial reports, and the organisation's work plan for the current year.
