National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marina Ragus, met today at the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia with the Head of the Political Department of the US Embassy, Catherine Croft.
Deputy Speaker Ragus informed the guest about the current political situation in Serbia and the upcoming elections. Ragus said that Serbia will soon hold elections, emphasising that they will be observed, among others, by the full OSCE Mission so as to dispel any doubts about the electoral process and election results.
Ragus also reminded the attending of the difficult situation in Kosovo-Metohija. She stressed that over 800 ethnically motivated incidents and violence have been recorded since 2021, with the latest beating of Nenad Raskovic from the village of Dren near Zubin Potok alone showing the true face and intention of Albin Kurti, which is the ethnic cleansing of Serbs. Therefore, she particularly emphasised that the withdrawal of KFOR forces from the bridge over the Ibar could lead to serious destabilisation of the situation, both in northern Mitrovica and throughout Kosovo-Metohija.
In the context of the importance of respecting international law and territorial integrity and sovereignty, she stressed that United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 is the foundation of Serbia's position when it comes to Kosovo-Metohija, stating that Pristina has not fulfilled its obligations under the Brussels Agreement, such as the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, for 13 years.
The officials also discussed the importance of strategic dialogue as an important mechanism for strengthening relations and raising issues of common interest.
The Head of the Political Department of the US Embassy, Catherine Croft stressed that she shares the hopes of finding solutions to the open issues and emphasised that it is important for Washington that Serbia find solutions that will contribute to further progress and stability.
Croft said that the United States will continue to support the step forward in the strategic dialogue between the two countries, ready to further strengthen cooperation and an open exchange of views on issues of mutual interest.
She also emphasised that Washington is interested in the course of the electoral process in Serbia, expressing the expectation that the electoral process will proceed in accordance with democratic standards and in a manner that will contribute to stability and trust in institutions.
The meeting was attended by Embassy advisors Elizabeth Bersin and Denis Ibisbegovic.
