Roundtable Held on Crisis Management Mechanisms in the EU
The National Assembly’s European Integrations Committee in cooperation with the National Democratic Institute held a roundtable at the National Assembly House on Crisis Management Mechanisms in the EU.
The participants were greeted by European Integrations Committee Chairman Laszlo Varga who said that the legislative processes taking place at the National Assembly are very important and related to the European integration process. Legislative Committee Chairman Vlatko Ratkovic agreed with the estimate that the parliament plays an important role in the European integration process, adding that the implementation of laws is as important as their adoption.
In her address, Director of the European Integration Office of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Milica Delevic expressed hope that Serbia would manage to tackle the remaining challenges and tasks relating to the European integration process, and that the opinion on Serbia’s bid for EU membership candidate status would be positive. She opined that the fact that Croatia is finishing up the negotiations was good for the region.
The participants were addressed by the American professor of public policy at George Mason University Desmond Dinan who also took part in the roundtable. In his address he explained the concept of crisis, chronology of the most important crisis situations in EU’s 50-year long history, possible impact the crisis might have on the EU, as well as the EU’s instruments for the prevention of future crisis periods. Dinan pointed out that the crisis in the Euro zone poses no threat to the survival of the EU explaining that it is a crisis in the banking system, a crisis of trust and credibility, but not a crisis of the system. The fact that the enlargement process continues indicates that the crisis would not have systemic consequences, Dinan concluded.
