Parliament Then and Now

In the context of the seven-day event “Week of Parliamentarism”, MPs Prof. Dr Dragoljub Micunovic and Natasa Vuckovic hosted a debate with the topic “Parliament Then and Now”, at the National Assembly Building.

The debate gathered current and former MPs, since 1991 to date. MPs Ivan Bauer and Vesna Marjanovic, and their colleagues from former legislatures Donka Banovic, Ljiljana Lucic, Milan Stanimirovic, Slobodan Vuckovic, Srdjan Mikovic, Suzana Grubjesic and Prof. Velimir Simonovic exchanged views on the development of parliamentarism since the institution of the multi-party system to the present. The participants noted that the existing election system should be amended if parliamentary culture is to develop further. The opinions on the types of election systems were varied, but all agreed that in some future change to the system gender representation should be an important issue, because the percentage of women MPs is in danger of dropping below the current numbers. The participants jointly concluded that the change to the election system should be such that the citizens’ interests are represented by delegates who win the most votes in their local community. In the course of the debate the participants exchanged opinions and reminisced about the beginnings of the multi-party system in Serbia which is to enter its 25th year of development in December.

The parliamentary debate was organised by the Centre for Democracy Foundation and Parliamentary Development Foundation, and could be followed via Twitter #ImateRec.
