PFG with Countries of Southeast Asia Meets with Cambodian Ambassador

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) Miroslav Petrasinovic, and the PFG members met today in the National Assembly House with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the Republic of Serbia, Tan Bunpa.

In a substantive and cordial conversation, the officials expressed readiness to further improve the friendly and traditionally good relations between the two countries, based on long-standing cooperation and mutual understanding. They particularly emphasised importance of the historical connection between Serbia and Cambodia through the Non-Aligned Movement, which provides the foundation for strengthening dialogue and mutual support on the international level, with special emphasis on the fact that this year marks the 70th anniversary diplomatic relations between the two countries, officially established on 15 July 1956.

Petrasinovic stressed that Serbia is on the European path and membership in the European Union is its strategic goal, also adding that Serbia pursues an autonomous, independent and militarily neutral foreign policy. "We want to preserve our sovereignty, our autonomy, independence and to be a friendly country to all other countries in the world," emphasized the Group's president.

The Ambassador underlined Cambodia's clear and principled position regarding the non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, stressing that Cambodia consistently supports Serbia, its territorial integrity, and respect for international law and the rule of law.

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group thanked Cambodia for its principled support, emphasising how highly Serbia values its consistency. In this context, he also pointed out the difficult situation in which the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija find themselves, faced with frequent violations of human and civil rights, stating that as many as 31 ethnically motivated attacks on the Serbian population have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Petrasinovic stressed that for 13 years running Pristina has not fulfilled its internationally recognised obligations delineated in the Brussels Agreement, namely the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

The officials also discussed the possibilities for improving political and parliamentary dialogue, as well as strengthening cooperation in the field of economy, with a special emphasis on agriculture. Digitalisation, information technologies and cybersecurity were also recognised as areas significant for improving cooperation. They expressed mutual readiness to encourage the implementation of projects of common interest and further strengthen overall bilateral relations through regular contacts and joint initiatives.

The meeting was attended by PFG members Stasa Stojanovic, Olivera Denic, Dobrica Veselinovic, Slavica Radovanovic and Branislav Josifovic, who also expressed interest and readiness to further deepen overall relations in the spirit of friendship and partnership.
