National Assembly Deputy Speaker Marina Ragus and Cypriot Ambassador to Serbia Discuss Situation in Kosovo-Metohija
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Marina Ragus met today with the Ambassador of Cyprus to Serbia Andreas Photiou, to discuss the current situation and problems the Serb population faced with in Kosovo-Metohija.
Ragus stressed that, what has recently especially escalated, is that Serbs are denied fundamental human and civil rights, which concerns her. The chronology of events in the last few months alone is aimed at ethnic the cleansing of Serbs from Kosovo-Metohija. Even though this time the reactions of the West have been more open, what is a cause of concern is that nothing concrete is being done to prevent Pristina from further unilateral actions.
Serbia remains firm in its stance that a solution can only be found through dialogue with the presupposition long defined in the Brussels Agreement which is the establishment of a community of municipalities with a Serb majority, said Ragus.
The Cypriot Ambassador said that Cyprus is closely following the development of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija and agrees with the view that dialogue is the only path to compromise. He expressed concern for the inhumane status Serbs have been put in that part of the Serbian territory and commiseration as part of a nation that shares a similar fate because of the current Cyprus dispute.
He underlined the friendly relations between the two countries stressing that Serbia can, as always, count on Cyprus’ full support both in its efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its European path.
The officials also discussed concrete plans how to improve interparliamentary cooperation as an important engine of development of relations between the two countries, as well as arrangements for meetings and visits focusing on resolving the newly developed problems in Kosovo-Metohija.
