Head of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to the Assembly of the Western European Union, Vesna Marjanovic, took part in the Assembly’s 59th annual session from 1 to 2 December 2010 in Paris.

The session was dedicated to current issues regarding the Common Security and Defense Policy in the EU (CSDP), particularly parliamentary control over the field, and issues relating to NATO and other current security and defense issues in Europe and the world.

Head of the Serbian delegation Vesna Marjanovic spoke in the debate on the report of the Western European Union Assembly on the “Implementation of the Lisbon Treaty: current debate on CSDP monitoring in national parliaments”. On the occasion she mentioned the general trend of deepening the democratic deficit of the European Union and decreasing the role of national parliaments in the EU integration process. Regarding it, she highlighted the important role of the parliamentarians in the control of defense and security and particularly the role of the national parliaments of the countries which are yet to become European Union members.

Vesna Marjanovic spoke about the current situation in Serbia as relates to the European integration process. She stressed that it was important that partner countries at the WEU Assembly take part in the dialogue on the future institutional structure of monitoring defense and security in Europe, and that such a formula should be implemented in the future.
