Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government Committee Holds Third Public Hearing in Novi Sad

Novi Sad hosted the Third Public Hearing of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government on the topic “Presentation of the Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Constitutional Court; Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Election of MPs; Bill amending and modifying the Law on Local Elections and the Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic, submitted by MP Miroslav Petrasinovic”.

Committee Chairman Dr Ugljesa Mrdic said that the Committee had decided to organise four public hearings on the topic “so as to contribute to the transparency and inclusivity of the process of improving the electoral legislation”.

He greeted the attendees who responded to the invitation - members of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government, MPs, representatives of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Novi Sad City Administration, as well as representatives of international organisations, stressing that by doing so they are greatly contributing to a successful consideration of this significant topic.

The submitter, MP Miroslav Petrasinovic said that all the proposed bills are part of the broader efforts to improve the electoral process conducted in cooperation with the OSCE/ODIHR Office. Re reminded that the National Assembly had last year amended the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll making thorough changes concerning the electoral roll. He then presented the four bills to the participants of the public hearing in detail.

In the discussion that followed, the participants exchanged opinions on the proposed legislation, and shared views and suggestions on it.

Dr Ugljesa Mrdic declared the discussion constructive and substantial and shared his hope that the bills will soon be put onto the agenda of a National Assembly session, adding that the views and opinions shared at this public hearing would prove useful.

The Committee had already held public hearings in Kragujevac and Nis and the coming public hearing on 7 May will be held in Belgrade in the National Assembly.
