International Association of Constitutional Law Holds Roundtable
Speaking at the roundtable of the International Association of Constitutional Law at the National Assembly House, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, acting President of the Republic of Serbia, opined that modern states, Serbia included, seek a constitutional and legal legitimacy of their own, and that "as usual, politics does not necessarily help the law".
At the roundtable on the “Main developments in constitutionalism and constitutional law between 1981 to 2011”, the Speaker said that “the multitude of challenges facing contemporary constitutional law and legal science are reflected in a more pronounced awakening of multiculturalism, in transition, in the intensive development of international law”. “The introduction of international law into national law, especially via the international legal standards of human rights protection, subtly expands the sphere of the supranational”, said Slavica Djukic Dejanovic.
Addressing the participants of the gathering at the National Assembly House, the Speaker deemed that there is no state or statesman who can remain indifferent to debates on law, adding that she was sure the roundtable would provide “new thought stimuli for the development of constitutional law and constitutionalism in future”.
The participants of the roundtable were also addressed by the President of the Constitutional Court Dragisa Slijepcevic, President of the International Association of Constitutional Law Martin Scheinin and President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio.
The roundtable marked the 30th anniversary of the International Association of Constitutional Law, founded in 1981 at the initiative of the Yugoslav Association of Constitutional Law in Belgrade.
