European Integrations Committee Delegation Talks to European Parliament’s Rapporteur on Serbia

A delegation of the European Integrations Committee headed by its Chairman Laszlo Varga met today at the National Assembly House with the European Parliament’s Rapporteur on Serbia Jelko Kacin.

A delegation of the European Integrations Committee headed by its Chairman Laszlo Varga met today at the National Assembly House with the European Parliament’s Rapporteur on Serbia Jelko Kacin. They discussed the European Parliament’s resolution on Serbia expected to be adopted in December or the beginning of next year. Kacin stressed that the European Parliament is interested in seeing as many Western Balkans countries as possible receive European Union candidacy status “so that the countries could motivate one another to move faster towards the EU”. He also opined that Serbia should progress faster on the road to Eurointegration, which would mean that it should achieve considerable progress in judiciary reform, regional cooperation, as well as cooperation with the Hague Tribunal in the upcoming months.

Kacin emphasised the country’s approach to the European Union as a “big national project” which should include all political parties and be realised in the atmosphere of mutual trust and public support.

Committee Chairman Laszlo Varga pointed out that gaining the status of EU membership candidate by the end of 2011 is a realistic goal for Serbia and that the Parliament would strive to fulfill all the obligations from the so-called roadmap.
