Seventh Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 16 October, the Environmental Protection Committee considered the proposal of Committee member Ivan Karic to organise a public hearing on: “ The impact of genetically modified organisms (transgenics) on the environment and health” and, following a short debate, adopted a Decision to organise the public hearing on 13 November 2012.


At the sitting, the Committee also debated the Environmental Protection Agency’s Annual Report – Results of the quality inspection of surface and underground waters for 2011. Agency Director Momcilo Zivkovic briefed the Committee members on the methodology used and number and types of surface and underground waters covered by the quality inspection. Zivkovic also stated that the Report sets the groundwork for the Report on the State of the Environment in the Republic of Serbia for 2011.
In the ensuing debate the Committee members were additionally informed about the results of the quality inspection of water in some parts of Serbia, as well as the status of underground waters. They also discussed the problem of untreated waste and industrial water as the key sources of water pollution with the Agency representatives. Zivkovic pointed out that few public utility companies have supplied the Agency with data on their emission of waste into water. The Committee members also discussed how the general image can be altered and how to improve the quality of water in Serbia.
Following the debate, the Committee adopted a Conclusion stating that it adopts the Environmental Protection Agency’s Annual Report – Results of the quality inspection of surface and underground waters for 2011.
In the continuation of the sitting, the Committee members voiced the initiative to hold a Committee sitting outside of the National Assembly headquarters, to discuss the topic of nickel exploitation in Serbia.
