Ruling Majority and Opposition in Agreement on Future Development

The members of the parliamentary Focus Group for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals achieved a very high degree of agreement on the activities to be implemented to ensure optimal development in line with the goals set out in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Supervision and monitoring of the way the executive implements the development goals will be a special focus of attention, particularly the work of the Interdepartmental Working Group for the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda headed by Minister Slavica Djukic Dejanovic.

In the legislative procedure the MPs will endorse those laws directly connected with the development goals, and the Interdepartmental Working Group will be asked for a list of bills which would ensure development in line with the UN Agenda and a certain dynamics of their submission into Assembly procedure. Some suggested doing an analysis of each bill submitted.

The MPs also suggested amending the National Assembly Rules of Procedure to make sustainable development goals and controlling their implementation an obligation for each assembly committee, and that the MPs, in line with their constitutional duty, talk to young people and marginalized groups to gather information about the citizens’ needs.

The talks on development-related mechanisms were part of the informative seminar organized by the National Assembly with the help of UNDP on 3 and 4 November in Vrdnik. The participants also conducted a self-assessment of the Assembly capacities to monitor the implementation of the sustainable development goals.
