Ruling Coalition Parliamentary Groups Representatives Meet with EP Rapporteur for Serbia

Representatives of the National Assembly parliamentary groups that make up the ruling coalition met today with the European Parliament's rapporteur for Serbia Tonino Picula.

The meeting was chaired by the National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs and the discussion was attended by Biljana Pantic Pilja, on behalf of the ALEKSANDAR VUCIC – Serbia Must Not Stop Parliamentary Group, Dunja Simonovic Bratic, on behalf of the IVICA DACIC - Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) Parliamentary Group, Branimir Jovanovic, on behalf of the Social Democratic Party of Serbia Parliamentary Group, Boris Bajic, on behalf of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians Parliamentary Group, and Edin Djerlek, National Assembly Deputy Speaker, on behalf of the Justice and Reconciliation Party.

The representatives of the ruling coalition parliamentary groups expressed their objections to the Draft text of the report on Serbia, which, in their opinion, should not6 be included or are not true, as well as the omission of those activities that were carried out in Serbia and were not taken into account.

The participants of the meeting discussed the alignment of Serbia's foreign policy with the EU's, the state of the judiciary in Serbia, the protests and their effects on society, violence in society, working on improving the electoral law in line with ODIHR recommendations, the position and rights of national minorities, and above all, the need to return dialogue into social discourse and normalise the work of the National Assembly, in order to adopt legal solutions important for stabilising the situation in the country and Serbia's European path. They expressed hope that the report would be balanced when it is presented to the MEPs, and that it would have a positive impact on our country’s European integration process.

Picula expressed his satisfaction that the meeting took place in this format and stressed that serious consultations with the parliamentarians are a prerequisite for the success of the work on the report, which has just begun and which will sublimate the views of different options, the economic community, media representatives and civil society. He expressed hope that the report on Serbia will be better, more complex and, most importantly, the result of compromise, i.e., the gold standard of the European Parliament.
