Paunovic with IPU Women Bureau President on Holding 2025 Meeting in Belgrade

Day two of the General Debate of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union that is to last until 17 October, with the topic “Harnessing science, technology and innovation for a more peaceful and a sustainable future", is underway in Geneva today.

On the sidelines of the 149th Assembly, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic met with the President of the IPU Bureau of the Women Parliamentarians Cynthia Lopez and talked about the Conference of Women Parliamentarians in Mexico, as well as the meeting of the IPU Bureau of the Women Parliamentarians scheduled to be held in Belgrade next year.

Having the meeting of the IPU Bureau of the Women Parliamentarians outside the organisation’s HQ would be a kind of breakthrough, because it would be the first time that the Bureau’s meeting was not held in the seat of the IPU assembly.

Paunovic stressed the importance of women's active participation in social, political and economic life.

"The Serbian parliament is made up of 40% women. In 2020, Serbia increased the mandatory minimum number of women on the electoral lists," said Paunovic.

She also used the opportunity to congratulate Mexico on electing a woman to the position of president, for the first time in the country's history.

They also discussed the measures and programmes that should contribute to the exercise of women's rights.

The Serbian delegation headed by Snezana Paunovic National Assembly Deputy Speaker Edin Djerlek and MPs Mladen Grujic, Ivana Stamatovic, Ivana Rokvic and Prof. Dr Jelena Jerinic.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the oldest international parliamentary organization and the biggest parliamentary forum dedicated to a dialogue of peace and cooperation between the people, which nurtures and promotes the concept of representative democracy, fosters contacts and considers questions of international importance.

Serbia hosted the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 2019.

The IPU has 180 member countries, and Serbia has been a full member since 1891.
