PFG with Canada Meets with Canadian Ambassador to Serbia
The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Canada, Svetlana Milijic, and the PFG members met today with the Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Serbia, Michelle Cameron.
The officials assessed that Serbia and Canada enjoy friendly relations and expressed their readiness to further improve cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.
Milijic stressed the importance of economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly pointing to the potential for cooperation in the fields of mining, energy, new technologies and digital transformation, as well as strengthening ties the fields of science, education and culture. She stressed that Serbia remains firmly committed to membership in the European Union, and pursues an independent and principled policy based on respect for international law. She reiterated that Serbia will never recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija and recalled that more than 30 states have withdrawn their recognition of the so-called Kosovo, thanks to the diplomatic efforts led by the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic. She also pointed to the difficult position of the Serbian and other non-Albanian population in Kosovo-Metohija, emphasizing the expectation that all agreements reached so far will be consistently implemented, including the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities.
Speaking about the upcoming specialized exhibition EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, Milijic emphasized that this event represents an exceptional opportunity to present Serbia to the world and further strengthen international cooperation, pointing out that a large number of countries have already confirmed their participation and invited Canada to be part of this significant global event.
The Canadian Ambassador emphasized the importance of parliamentary cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy for the further development of relations between the two countries. She highlighted the traditionally friendly and close relations between the Serbian and Canadian people, with a special focus on the importance of establishing a direct Belgrade-Toronto flight after 34 years, as it will further connect the citizens of the two countries and contribute to strengthening friendly ties.
Member of the PFG with Canada and Chairperson of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija, Danijela Nikolic, informed the Ambassador about the position of the Serbian people and Serbian institutions in Kosovo-Metohija, pointing out the numerous difficulties that Serbs face every day. She emphasized the need for the international community to be informed about the real picture of the life of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and the problems that threaten their fundamental rights and security. She emphasized that the Serbian people have the right to a life worthy of a human being, as well as the right to preserve their language, culture, tradition and identity. On the occasion, Nikolic presented the Ambassador with the book "Serbian Medieval Monasteries in Kosovo-Metohija", so that she could further familiarize herself with the rich Serbian cultural and spiritual heritage in Kosovo-Metohija.
The officials agreed that there is significant room to further cooperation between Serbia and Canada and expressed their belief that today's conversation will contribute to the intensification of mutual relations.
