Opposition Parliamentary Groups Meet with Council of Europe Secretary-General

Representatives of the opposition parliamentary groups met today at the National Assembly with the Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia.

Emphasising the importance of the meeting, MP Borko Stefanovic pointed out that the Council of Europe is one of the most important organisations that monitor human rights and free elections. He stressed that it would be extremely important for a Council of Europe observation mission to monitor the upcoming local elections in 10 municipalities, scheduled for 29 March. Stefanovic stressed that pressured is being exerted on voters, through vote buying and blackmailing of citizens employed in the public sector.

He also spoke about the difficult situation in the country and the repression carried out against the citizens, as well as the poor state of the media, police, and judiciary.

Borko Stefanovic also stressed that the opinion the Venice Commission should give as regards the recently adopted judicial laws is of exceptional importance.

The meeting was also attended by MPs Miroslav Aleksic, Radomir Lazovic, Prof. Dr Slobodan Cvejic, Aleksandar Pavic, Zeljko Veselinovic, Tatjana Pasic and Shaip Kamberi.

They briefed the guest on the situation in the country, pointing out that the European integration process has been halted and adding that an orderly society, one which has institutions, the rule of law and free elections, does not suit the regime. They also said that the government is responding with repression to the citizens’ rebellion and dissatisfaction, and that there is no improvement in electoral conditions.

The MPs repeated that the arrival of a Council of Europe observation mission to monitor the upcoming local elections in Serbia would be of exceptional importance.

Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset said that elections were one of the main themes of his visit, adding that it was necessary to send an official invitation to the Congress of the Council of Europe so that they could send their observation mission to the local elections in Serbia.

Berset emphasised that the role of the Council of Europe is to work openly and transparently with all of its member states, as well as to provide support to candidate countries in their reforms for EU membership.
