Ninth Sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child

At the sitting held on 17 March 2026, the Committee on the Rights of the Child talked discussed the drafting and adoption of a new strategic document for the prevention and protection of children from violence.

The National Assembly Speaker reminded the attending that at the previous sitting the Committee agreed to organise a special thematic sitting dedicated to the development of a new strategic document for the prevention and protection of children from violence, and today's sitting is held according to it.

"Given that the last Strategy for the Prevention of Children from Violence, adopted in 2020, expired in 2023, it is necessary to ensure the continuity of public policies in this area and today's sitting is an opportunity to jointly consider the upcoming activities in the preparation of a new strategic document, to learn about the results of the implementation of the previous strategy, any challenges that have been identified and ways to overcome them, while respecting the broader European context, because this, in addition to what is necessary for us, is also important for our European path," said the National Assembly Speaker.

Minister of Family Care and Demography Jelena Zaric Kovacevic informed the attending about the key steps, i.e. what activities and measures are planned in the process of preparing the new strategic document.

The Speaker stressed that it is very important that the Committee gets involved in this activity and supports the Ministry, so that we can have a new strategic document as soon as possible and start implementing it.

The attending were also addressed by Bojana Tosic, Director of the Republic Public Policy Secretariat, who explained the reasons for creating the Programme for the Prevention and Protection of Children from Violence, which would later be part of the broader Human Rights Strategy, as well as Dejana Kostadinova, Director of UNICEF Serbia. Representatives of relevant ministries and other state bodies and the non-governmental sector also took part in the discussion and contributed to the discussion of key issues of importance for the development of the strategic document.

In the discussion, the attending also addressed the topic of social networks, with special emphasis on the potential dangers and risks they pose, and had a detailed discussion about these aspects.

The Speaker urged all relevant stakeholders to ensure timely and efficient dynamics in the process of drafting and implementing a new strategic document for the prevention and protection of children from violence in the Republic of Serbia, stressing that the document aims to reduce all forms of violence against children and improve the system of their protection.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Ana Brnabic, and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Nevena Djuric, Edin Djerlek, Dr Jovan Janjic, Haji Milorad Stosic, Natasa Ivanovic, Natasa Mihajlovic, Vesna Nedovic, Prof. Dr Marija Zdravkovic, Prim.
