National Assembly Speaker on International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women
“On this, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women we find the data on the numbers of abused women worrying. It is a terrible fact that women between 15 and 44 years of age are more often victims of domestic violence than of malignant diseases or car accidents.
Violence, physical, sexual, psychological or economic, is a reality for a great many women and is unfortunately affecting the family, first and foremost children, and the society as a whole, and incites other forms of violent behaviour.
Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, in addition to the legislation past and future adopted to punish any form of violence against women, it is important to raise the citizens’ awareness on the problem. We need to foster ties among all the institutions and set up support mechanisms for the victims of violence.
We all have to be decisive in the fight against the plague that is violence against women. That is how we can prove that Serbia can be a country with zero tolerance for violence.”
