National Assembly Speaker Talks to Venice Commission Delegation

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, received a delegation of the Venice Commission, headed by Thomas Markert, Venice Commission Secretary.


The delegation is visiting the Republic of Serbia in order to prepare a draft opinion on the bills on judges, on the organisation of the court network and on public prosecution.
Speaker Stefanovic thanked the Venice Commission for its expert assistance, stressing its contribution to the improved quality of the bills aimed at strengthening the judiciary and fighting corruption and crime.
He expects that the implementation of Council of Europe standards would help expedite Serbia’s progress toward Europe. The Parliament Speaker emphasised the existence of political will to strengthen the judiciary institutions, as well as the zero tolerance for corruption, all aimed at reclaiming the citizens’ trust in the institutions and foreign investors’ trust in Serbia.
The representatives of the Venice Commission commended the Serbian authorities' anti-corruption struggle stressing that it is one of the priorities of the Council of Europe, presented by CoE Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland in the course of the January Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
