National Assembly Speaker Receives US Ambassador to Serbia
The National Assembly Speaker, MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, received the US Ambassador to Serbia, H.E. Michael Kirby.
Speaker Stefanovic provided in depth information about the bills the Parliament is soon to discuss, saying that the institution of public hearing has proved very efficient in strengthening the Parliament’s role, while, as regards the work of said Board of Inquiry, he said that first results could be expected in the third quarter of the year.
Ambassador Kirby shared his enthusiasm at the course of the talks between Serbia and the representatives of Pristina in Brussels.
Speaker Stefanovic noted that progress has definitely been made, sharing his optimism and adding, in that context, that he hoped the European Council’s decision on the start date for European Union talks would be a positive one and that the talks would start this year.
Ambassador Kirby responded that the US position on the matter is clear, adding that the process begins with the so-called screening which would enable the monitoring of the situation before the talks chapter is opened.
They emphasised the importance of regional cooperation especially in view of the fact that Croatia will become a member of the European Union on 1 July, as well as the Parliament’s important role in the future harmonisation of national and European Union legislation.
