National Assembly Speaker Receives Thorbjørn Jagland
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic received Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland.
CoE Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland showed great interest in various issues, particularly the elections in Serbia from the aspect of elections in Kosovo-Metohija. He was pleased that Serbia was granted EU candidate status. He stressed that, in its Resolution 1858, the CoE Parliamentary Assembly deemed that Serbia had made considerable progress in meeting its obligations since the last Resolution in 2009. Jagland believes that Serbia should achieve further progress in the reform of the judiciary system, anti-corruption measures and protection of minorities.
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic briefed the CoE Secretary General on the efforts expended so far to ensure Serbia’s progress toward full EU membership. The Speaker agreed that the spheres Thorbjørn Jagland listed indeed need to be improved and explained the procedures concerning to the upcoming elections, particularly those relating to the elections in Kosovo-Metohija. In that context she emphasised that, as regards Kosovo-Metohija, on should look to the Serbian Constitution and Resolution 1244, as well as the presence of the international factor.
