Nikogosian is visiting Serbia on occasion of the one-year anniversary of the full implementation of the Law on Protection of Citizens from Tobacco Smoke Exposure, as well as the fifth anniversary of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control coming into force.

The Republic of Serbia ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on 8 February 2006, and on 9 May of the same year the Convention came into force. Nikogosian stressed that Serbia was among the first to ratify the Convention thus playing an important role in South-East Europe. According to him, Serbia took a step further by passing the Law on Protection of Citizens from Tobacco Smoke Exposure.

National Assembly Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic remarked on the citizens’ exceptional support of the Law on Protection of Citizens from Tobacco Smoke Exposure.

On the fifth anniversary of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control coming into force, Haik Nikogosian presented Slavica Djukic Dejanovic with a copy of the Convention. He stressed that the implementation of legislation stemming from the Framework Convention which has been widely embraced in Serbia, makes our country an exception in the region and beyond.
