National Assembly Speaker Opens Gathering on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The report on the accessibility of the National Assembly was presented today, at the gathering marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic opened the gathering pointing out that the task of the MPs, as the elected representatives of the citizens, is to do everything in their power to make sure every member of society fulfils their full potential.

"Every millimetre we move ahead in this sense will be an incomparably bigger step toward a richer society and a happier country," emphasised Brnabic.

She emphasised the importance of the Parliamentary Group for the Improvement of the Position of Persons with Disabilities, because the Parliament, as the House of all citizens, is an institution that puts political pluralism first but is also open to civil society organisations. Brnabic also said that the fact that the head and deputy head of this important parliamentary group are representatives of the opposition goes to show that there are topics that are above politics and that they will therefore have her unreserved support as the National Assembly Speaker.

Head of the Parliamentary Group for the Improvement of the Position of Persons with Disabilities Prof. Dr Slobodan Cvejic said that the presentation of the Accessibility Report on the National Assembly is only one aspect of the possible inclusion of persons with disabilities in the political life of Serbia, but a very significant one because, as he pointed out, in this legislative body, persons with disabilities should have a stronger say and a greater influence on the creation of the policies in the Republic. He emphasised that the first step of the Parliamentary Group will be the creation of an activity plan, which will contribute to people with disabilities becoming more visible to the MPs themselves and more active in political life.

The Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission in Serbia Carolina Hidea, Deputy Head of the ODIHR Democratisation Department Julia Gebhard and the director of the NDI Serbia Office Stephanie Lynn also spoke at the gathering.
