National Assembly Speaker Opens Conference of Speakers of Parliament of EU Candidate Countries

Today, in Belgrade, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, opened the two-day Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of EU Candidate Countries, organised by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

Addressing the participants, Brnabic emphasised that the main goal of the conference is to establish a permanent format of cooperation among the heads of parliaments of EU candidate countries, based on regular dialogue, exchange of experiences, and joint initiatives.

She stressed that Belgrade is sending a message of political maturity, responsibility and readiness of the candidate countries to, in addition to implementing reforms on their own, also develop mutual partnerships.

"This is the first time that the heads of parliaments of candidate countries for membership in the European Union have launched a joint initiative to establish regular cooperation. I believe that this conference will launch a new model of connecting our parliaments," said Brnabic.

The Speaker of the National Assembly stated that the conference was the result of a long-term dialogue and a shared belief that parliaments should play a more active role in strengthening cooperation among candidate countries. She added that the participating countries are at different stages of European integration and face different challenges, which is why the exchange of experiences is of particular importance.

Brnabic assessed that closer cooperation between candidate countries represents an important contribution to the European integration process, emphasising that parliaments are not only places for passing laws, but also key institutions for democratic dialogue, political accountability, and legitimisation of reform processes.

She expressed her satisfaction that a new format of cooperation is starting in Belgrade, as a joint initiative of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, emphasising that the goal is for the heads of the parliaments of the candidate countries to continue to meet regularly, exchange experiences and act jointly towards partners in the European Union.

Brnabic thanked the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, for his cooperation in organising the conference, as well as the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, for his support for this initiative.
