National Assembly Speaker Meets with Hungarian President

Today, the National Assembly Speaker received Hungarian President János Áder at the National Assembly House.

Expressing his pleasure at the improvement of bilateral relations in the previous period, National Assembly Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic thanked Hungary for its support of Serbia’s Euro-integration process. Speaker Stefanovic stressed that the Republic of Serbia views the process primarily as an opportunity to reach certain standards and values and sees its accession as an expected result of the efforts it had invested.
Speaker Stefanovic stressed that the adoption of the Declaration of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Condemning the Acts against Hungarian Civilians in Vojvodina Committed from 1944-1945 is an expression of respect for the victims and of a clear commitment to the future.
Stefanovic expressed readiness to work jointly on improving the status of national minorities.
Emphasising the importance of economic cooperation in the region, Stefanovic urged for developing joint investments, pointing out the advantages of joint ventures onto third markets and the advantages of agricultural cooperation.
Speaker Stefanovic emphasised the importance of furthering interparliamentary relation and announced he would be visiting the Hungarian Parliament in October.
Hungarian President János Áder was grateful for the adoption of the Declaration at the National Assembly on 21 June, saying that it is a historic gesture as an expression of respect for all the innocent victims, both Serbs and Hungarians, in 1944 and 1945.
The Hungarian President relayed the greetings of Hungarian Parliament Speaker László Kövér, saying that Budapest expects Speaker Stefanovic’s visit with great pleasure.
Saying he hoped for a positive outcome i.e. decision as regards the start date for European Union talks on 28 June, President Áder said that Hungary would always support Serbia’s progress to Europe and offered assistance through the exchange of experiences.
Speaker Stefanovic urged for cooperation in international organisations in the region’s interest.
Concluding the meeting, Speaker Stefanovic restated the importance of the Serbian and Hungarian officials’ belief that we should turn to the future.
