National Assembly Speaker Meets with European Parliament President
The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Maja Gojkovic, met today with the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, which marked the beginning of his visit to Serbia.
The National Assembly Speaker said the fact the European Union recognises the country’s progress is very important for Serbia, adding that she expected the first negotiation chapters to soon be opened.
Gojkovic said that the current parliamentary legislature fully supports European integration, based on the clearly expressed will of the people in the elections.
Schulz said that “Serbia belongs in Europe and the doors of the European Union are open for the Western Balkans”, adding that Serbia and the EU need to invest in the continued Euro-integration process. He stressed that Serbia’s EU accession should be viewed as a common goal of Serbia and the European Union.
Schulz said that the European structures support the regional policy of peace and stability pursued by Serbia.
Gojkovic pointed out that Serbia is dedicated to the promotion of regional relations, stressing that it would continue to pursue the policy of cooperation, peace and stability. The National Assembly Speaker said that the countries of the region have a vested interest to cooperate in numerous areas, economy and infrastructure in particular.
Tomorrow, the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, will address the MPs at a special sitting of the Parliament.
