National Assembly Speaker Dr Vladimir Orlic at Gathering on International Human Rights Day

The social dialogue with the topic “Leave Noone Behind – 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights” hosted by the National Assembly House, was closed by an address by the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic.

As he pointed out, in previous years the Republic of Serbia has shown that human rights are an area of priority importance, which the National Assembly also contributes to by adopting laws, ratifying international treaties and declarations and passing a series of strategies and other acts regulating and improving it.

"Two years ago, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia adopted amendments and modification to the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament and the Law on Local Elections, which stipulate that at least 40% of the candidates on an electoral list should be members of the less represented gender. The next year, 2021, a new, modern Law on Gender Equality was adopted, securing equal rights, equal participation and balanced representation of women and men in all areas of social life and guaranteeing them equal opportunities to exercise their rights and freedoms. On the same day, the Assembly passed amendments and modifications to the Anti-Discrimination Law which additionally define the types and forms of discrimination. With these laws, state institutions and the support of every citizen of Serbia, we have contributed to the creation of a society with equal opportunities for all," said the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

He went on to say that the human rights of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija are being most brutally and recklessly violated every day. "We expect and demand the world to react, that these people, guilty only because they belong to a certain nation, be protected and that the international community stand up for them just as it would do for itself and its citizens. Keeping quiet and ignoring the situation is not only the worst kind of injustice, it is the biggest insult to the human being in each of us, regardless of the surname we bear or language we speak," said Dr Orlic.

As he pointed out, regulating the field of human rights in the broadest sense will remain one of the priorities of the 13th legislature of the National Assembly. "We take it on ourselves to protect, represent and improve the human rights of every person, without exception, as well as to be proud of and celebrate differences. I am saying this on my own behalf but, I am sure, I can say it on behalf of all the MPs and the state policy to which we belong and pursue, because it is these values proclaimed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that are woven into the foundations of our political beliefs and actions," concluded the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.
