National Assembly Ready to Continue Cooperation with UNDP

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met with the UNDP Resident Representative in Serbia Yakup Beris, whom he welcomed, stressing that the National Assembly is ready to continue its successful cooperation with UNDP.

He listed the series of successful projects realised in cooperation with UNDP, such as supporting the work of the Women's Parliamentary Network, holding committee sitting outside of the National Assembly seat and organising a series of trainings available to MPs.

National Assembly Speaker Dr Orlic particularly emphasised the importance of the Kosovo-Metohija issue for the Republic of Serbia.

"All the members of the UN heard the historic address of the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic before the United Nations General Assembly. On behalf of our country, he communicated a clear position that we strongly advocate for the observance of the principles of international law, as well as the binding UN Security Council Resolution 1244, in accordance with which UNDP operates on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija. We expect that all subsequent activities will be carried out in compliance with the aforementioned Resolution and the appropriate marking of Kosovo-Metohija, at all meetings and within the framework of all activities concerning the UN, that is, to be in accordance with existing agreements and obligations," said Dr Orlic.

He stressed that the UN will always have a stable partner in Serbia, which unequivocally advocates for respecting international law, as well as all signed agreements and related obligations, and which is fundamentally interested in seeking a solution that would mean peace and stability for all.

UNDP Resident Representative in Serbia Yakup Beris agreed that peace and stability are the goals both the United Nations and Serbia strive for, and in light of that, welcomed the address of the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic before the UN General Assembly, who, as he said, "touched on the most important global issues in the five points of his speech."

Speaking about the continuation of cooperation, Mr. Beris said that UNDP's support would in future still in principle be focused on environmental protection, the fight against corruption, digitisation and gender equality.

"What is immediately ahead of us is the continued support for the drafting of a parliamentary support service development strategy, National Assembly digitalisation strategy and communication strategy. In addition, we are planning a series of mobile parliamentary committee sessions, development of a budget portal and further support for capacity building through MP trainings", said the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Serbia Yakup Beris.

The officials concluded that concrete steps would be taken in the coming period as regards the realisation of the various projects of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Serbia.
