National Assembly House Hosts Exhibition “Jasenovac – Lasting Warning”

The National Assembly House is hosting the exhibition “Jasenovac - Lasting Warning” in its Central Hall, organised by the Museum of Genocide Victims with the support of the Ministry of Culture to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Jasenovac camp system by the heroic breakout of its prisoners, dedicated to 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

At the opening of the exhibition the attendees were addressed by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Jovan Janjic and Executive Director of the Museum of Genocide Victims Nikola Milosevski, as the author of the exhibition.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker emphasised that the genocide on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia was not carried out spontaneously, but was systematically committed and legalised by the Independent State of Croatia, created in a state of occupation under Nazi and fascist auspices. He also emphasised that we are witnessing a revision of history and that efforts are being made to drastically reduce the number of victims in Jasenovac and in general on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia, which offends the truth and the descendants of the victims. The revision of history hides the ugly past, not in order to distance itself from it, but in order to continue to dwell on it. The Serbian people bear the pain of what happened to their people, their ancestors, said National Assembly Deputy Speaker Jovan Janjic.

Executive Director of the Museum of Genocide Victims Nikola Milosevski also spoke at the opening of the exhibition, who said that the exhibition's display depicted a very genocidal, intolerant policy that the Independent State of Croatia implemented in the Jasenovac camp, as the greatest place of suffering for the Serbian people, but not only the Serbian, the Jewish and Roma people on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia as well.

The aim of the exhibition is to objectively and comprehensively present the suffering of innocent victims in the Jasenovac concentration and death camp system, a symbol of the genocide committed by the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia in World War II.

The exhibition focuses on the historical context, organisation and dynamics of crimes committed against members of the Serbian, Jewish and Roma people in the Jasenovac camp system, as well as on the culmination of the criminal policy that was omnipresent throughout the territory of the Independent State of Croatia during the war years. By presenting historical facts, more or less known to the public, as well as museum objects, as material testimonies of suffering, the authors sought to contribute to the actualisation of one of the most difficult topics in the history of the Serbian people, while at the same time rescuing the Jasenovac victims, as well as the survivors, from oblivion, stressed the author of the exhibition.
