National Assembly Hosts Conference on Special Report on Discrimination against Children

The National Assembly House hosted a Conference dedicated to the presentation of the Special Report on Discrimination against Children. In his introductory address, National Assembly Speaker and the Chairman of the Committee on the Rights of the Child Ivica Dacic said that the Report is very detailed and comprehensive, covering a large period of time, from 2014 to the middle of this year.

“First of all, I would like to point out one of his main findings - that in this period the situation concerning the position of children has improved and significant progress has been made in the exercise of their rights. In this regard, I am glad that this Report also states that the Republic of Serbia has built an adequate anti-discrimination legal framework in recent years by adopting numerous laws in this area and ratifying all relevant international documents related to improving human rights and non-discrimination. The Law on Prohibition of Discrimination, adopted by the National Assembly, is in that sense the foundation of our joint fight against discrimination in all its forms, including the fight against discrimination against children”, said Speaker Dacic.

However, as Dacic says, discrimination against children is still very much present in our society, despite the fact that our legal and institutional framework prohibits it, adding that the institutions of our state and the society as a whole must invest considerable efforts to eliminate all forms of discrimination against children.

“That is why that this Special Report on Discrimination against Children, presented to us today, should be understood as an invitation to all socially responsible actors in our country, to work together to contribute to every child being treated in a dignified manner, whatever their mutual differences and specificities, with the aim of creating a society in which discrimination against children would be eliminated”, concluded Dacic.

The Minister of Family Welfare and Demography and President of the Council for Child Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Radomir Dmitrovic, Minister for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue Gordana Comic, Minister of Youth and Sports Vanja Udovicic and UNICEF Serbia Representative Deyana Kostadinova also addressed the assembly.

The Special Report on Discrimination against Children was presented by the Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic.

The presentation was followed by a panel discussion on "The role of the civil sector in improving the position of children", with the participation of Ivana Badnjarevic of the Lil’ Brave One Association (Hrabriša), Nada Djurickovic of the Roma Centre for Women and Children "DAJE", Lidija Bukvic Brankovic on behalf of the Centre for Positive Development Children and Youth (CEPORE), and Goran Rojevic, Director of the Humanitarian Organisation Children's Heart, with Nevena Vuckovic Sahovic of the Child Rights Centre as the introductory speaker and moderator.

The end result of the Conference were recommendations how to jointly combat discrimination against children in all its forms.
