National Assembly Deputy Speaker Marina Ragus at 6th Belgrade Think Tank Conference – Memorandum of Understanding Signed

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the People’s Republic of China Marina Ragus took part in the 6th Think Tank Conference organised by the Belt and Road Institute Belgrade with the support of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Serbia.

On the occasion, the Belt and Road Institute and the PFG with the People’s Republic of China signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of advanci9ng cooperation in areas of mutual interest and establishing a long-standing partnership based on the principles of the Belt and Road Initiative.

In her opening address, Ragus recalled the great suffering of World War II, stressing that both the Chinese and Serbian people made enormous sacrifices in the fight against Nazism and fascism.

Speaking about contemporary geopolitical circumstances, she pointed to the establishment of a unipolar world order and the suffering of former Yugoslavia, including the 1999 NATO aggression, during which the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Belgrade was bombed.

"For seventy-eight days, my people did not even have the opportunity to fight against the largest and strongest military forces in the Western Hemisphere. Yet, not a single soldier laid down his arms and no capitulation was signed, instead it was the Military-Technical Agreement in Kumanovo," Ragus pointed out.

She emphasised that United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 remains the foundation of Serbia's position when it comes to Kosovo-Metohija, pointing to the importance of respecting international law, the UN Charter and the principle of sovereign equality of states.

Ragus assessed that contemporary international relations are increasingly faced with a policy of double standards and the use of force instead of consistent respect for international law.

Speaking about relations between Serbia and China, she expressed gratitude for, as she stated, the steely friendship between the two countries and the trust built by the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping.

"We are the only country in Europe that had the honour to sign the Joint Statement on deepening and advancing comprehensive strategic partnership and building a Serbia-China community with a shared future in the new era," emphasized Ragus.

The signed Memorandum of Understanding envisages the development of cooperation in areas of mutual interest, exchange of experiences, strengthening of institutional ties and the promotion of the goals of the Belt and Road Initiative, with particular emphasis on political coordination, infrastructure connectivity, economic cooperation and strengthening mutual understanding between the peoples of Serbia and China.
