National Assembly Deputy Speaker Kovacs Meets with Hungarian Deputy Minister of European Affairs

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met today, at the National Assembly, with Hungarian Deputy Minister of European Affairs, Bárna Pál Zsigmond, currently visiting the Republic of Serbia.

Elvira Kovacs thanked Hungary for its persistent and continuous support for the European integration of Serbia and the Western Balkans region, as well as for Hungary's commitment to EU enlargement.

Bárna Pál Zsigmond emphasised that Serbia is ready for the next step, the opening of Cluster 3, adding that there should be no double standards when it comes to membership criteria, and that each country should progress based on its success in adopting and implementing necessary reforms.

With this in mind, Hungary has again prepared, as it had during its presidency of the EU Council, a "non-paper", with which it wants to support the opening of the next cluster, Zsigmond said.

During the conversation, the Hungarian Deputy Minister of European Affairs expressed the view that this country supports the EU developing a partnership with Ukraine, but also that the importance of fulfilling the necessary criteria for progress in the integration process, which apply to all candidate countries, should be taken into account.

The officials also discussed the future of Europe and energy challenges, as well as the importance of cooperation within the Western Balkans region.

In the course of the day, Bárna Pál Zsigmond also met with the members of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians Parliamentary Group.
