National Assembly Deputy Speaker Jovan Janjic Meets with Tunisia - Serbia PFG Delegation

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Tunisia, Jovan Janjic, met, at the National Assembly, with a delegation of the Tunisia – Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Assembly of People’s Representatives of the Republic of Tunisia, headed by Najla Lahiani, member of the Committee on Education, Vocational Training, Research, Youth and Sports.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Head of the PFG with Tunisia Jovan Janjic stressed that this year we are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations, that friendly relations and closeness between our peoples date back to the First World War, and that this year we are marking 110 years since the landing of the Serbian army in Bizerte.

The Head of the PFG thanked the Republic of Tunisia for its consistent support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia, as well as for its non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo.

Najla Lahiani, Head of the Tunisia – Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Assembly of People’s Representatives of the Republic of Tunisia, took the opportunity to reaffirm the principled position of the Republic of Tunisia, which includes non-recognition of the unilateral independence of Kosovo and adherence to the common values of international law. She confirmed her country's participation in the EXPO 2027 Specialised Exhibition in Belgrade, saying that this event represents an exceptional opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations, improve economic and investment cooperation, as well as to more intensively connect the institutions and citizens of the two countries.

The members of the Tunisian delegation also took part in the discussion, each providing constructive proposals from their respective departments for deepening cooperation in the fields of healthcare, pharmacy, education, culture, science, industry, trade, modern technologies and digitalisation.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to the Republic of Serbia, Imen Laajili Ammari, emphasised that Serbia and Tunisia have long-standing friendly and traditionally good relations. She assessed that meetings of this kind represent a significant contribution to strengthening mutual trust and improving cooperation in areas of common interest. She also announced that the Republic of Tunisia will be the guest of honour at the upcoming International Belgrade Book Fair this year.

The meeting was also attended by MP Zagorka Aleksic, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child and member of the PFG with Tunisia, who particularly emphasised that in this delicate geopolitical moment, the Republic of Serbia values its friends, stressing that with its principled position on issues of vital national interest for Serbia, the Republic of Tunisia confirms that it is one of them.

The Head of the PFG expressed his belief that the visit of the Tunisian parliamentary delegation opens the door to both parliamentary cooperation and overall relations between the two countries, as well as to the deepening of friendly ties between the two peoples, underlining the increasing rate of tourist visits, which will be furthered by the established direct air traffic between Serbia and Tunisia with 12 flights per week.
