The Parliamentary Committee of the Parliamentary Dimension of the Central European Initiative (CEI) had a meeting in Bucharest on 26 and 27 May 2026, organised by the Romanian Senate, within the framework of the Romanian Chairmanship of the CEI.
The meeting was opened by the President of the CEI Parliamentary Dimension, Rozalia-Ibolya Biro, the President of the Romanian Senate, Mircea Abrudean, State Secretary for European Affairs, Clara Staicu, and the CEI Secretary General, Franco Dal Mas.
The meeting brought together representatives of the CEI member states’ parliaments to discuss the topics of improving regional cooperation and connectivity as a prerequisite for sustainable economic development and European integration of the region. Serbian National Assembly delegation comprising MPs Ana Miljanic and Branimir Jovanovic took part in the meeting.
Special emphasis was placed on infrastructural and digital connectivity, strengthening the role of local governments, as well as involving young people in regional cooperation and development processes. The participants emphasised the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and mutual cooperation for strengthening stability, economic cohesion and the European perspectives of the countries of Central and Southeastern Europe.
In her speech on the topic "Connectivity and infrastructure as key drivers of economic growth, regional cohesion and strategic resilience in the CEI region", Ana Miljanic said:
"Serbia is consistent in all international forums in its position that connectivity must be inclusive, green and based on respect for sovereignty, good neighbourliness and mutual respect." She also emphasised that Corridor 10 is one of the most important pan-European corridors, encompassing a large number of CEI member states. "Cross-border cooperation is not just a technical issue - it is an expression of political will, a shared vision and a willingness to overcome differences for the common good. In this process, the CEI region has the potential to be an example of successful cooperation and a bridge between different parts of Europe," concluded Ana Miljanic.
Speaking about the role of local authorities and young people in improving cross-border connectivity in the CEI region, Branimir Jovanovic emphasised that it is particularly important to improve cross-border programs that enable young people to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas. It is young people who represent the driving force of every society. They bring energy, creativity and new perspectives. When we give young people the opportunity to collaborate with their peers from other countries, we are not only building professional connections – we are building friendships, understanding and peace.
During the meeting, opinions were exchanged on further improving cooperation within the CEI, with particular emphasis on supporting the European Union enlargement process and strengthening regional connectivity.
