National Assembly Committed to Sustainable Development Goals

Dr Milorad Mijatovic, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is taking part in the meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, with the topic "Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality". 47 UN member states will be presenting their regular voluntary reviews of the 2030 Agenda, including for the first time, Serbia.

The Serbian delegation is headed by Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, minister without portfolio responsible for demography and population policy and Head of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group for the Implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, who presented Serbia’s First Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

In his address, Mijatovic said that the National Assembly’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals has already yielded some notable results, such as the establishment of the Focus Group for the Development of Control Mechanisms for the Process of Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2017 and two public hearings on the topic, as well as self-evaluation and evaluation of the implementation which show that considerable progress had been achieved in the past two years.

“In the coming period we will be focusing on two activities – raising public awareness via the media at the national and local level on the importance of the proper implementation of the SDGs and a Serbia-wide campaign where the MPs will be speaking, primarily with young people, about the importance of the SDGs for their future, as well as with local authorities, civic associations and the media. We want to hear their needs and ideas how to make Serbia a better place to live”, Mijatovic said.
