MP Numanovic Meets with Pakistani Ambassador to Serbia

MP Edin Numanovic met today with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Serbia, Syed Faraz Hussain Zaidi, with whom he discussed improving parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Ambassador Zaidi stressed that Serbia and Pakistan have a long history of good bilateral relations, which can be improved. He recalled that Pakistan reopened its embassy in Belgrade in 2001 and has since then been actively working on improving bilateral relations with Serbia, and expressed hope that the Serbian side would also consider opening an embassy in his country, which would further strengthen the relations between the two countries. Ambassador Zaidi especially focused on improving parliamentary cooperation, especially at the level of friendship groups in both parliaments.

MP Edin Numanovic stressed that the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is an important country, in the geopolitical sense, in the eastern part of the world, which is becoming increasingly important for Serbia. He opined that the cooperation between Serbia and Pakistan is good, but that it can certainly be better in many areas of mutual importance, such as education and new technologies. There is room for improvement in both overall relations and parliamentary cooperation, and the National Assembly is fully prepared for this development, Numanovic said. He added that he would initiate forming a Parliamentary Friendship Group with Pakistan in the National Assembly, especially since the geographical distance between the countries should not be an obstacle to cooperation between their peoples.

Numanovic spoke about the position and challenges of the Bosniak community that he represents in Parliament, saying that the common religious values and mutual understanding between Bosniaks and the people of Pakistan represent significant potential for the development of cooperation and strengthening of friendly relations between the two countries.

The officials agreed that parliamentary cooperation should also be improved via multilateral, parliamentary organisations such as the IPU. The meeting, among other things, touched on the complex relations between Pakistan and India, and Numanovic took the opportunity to invite the Ambassador to visit the cities and municipalities in Sandzak, especially Sjenica, highlighting its considerable agricultural and touristic potential.
